Goodbye Vaio!

a.jpg

Eventually, I bought a new laptop. I think it’s a sensible choice. I have been using my sister’s computer for almost two weeks since my Vaio totally broke down. I sent it to Sony for inspection. They quoted me HKD4,000.00 for the following problems:

Constantly Hard or Optical Drive problem on hard disc

CD/DVD Drive mechanism problem

Intermittently power up, but no operation

Web cam got no picture, and function totally off

I decided to leave it. I could get it repaired with lower price in some small computer shops, but it might cause some hassles. They might have problem to deal with the hard disc if they couldn’t find the second hand Sony components. I just simply bought the new one.

I ended up buying ASUS S6F .I didn’t have a clue what I should buy. I have been looking at various brands for few weeks. I don’t buy Vaio again because there are too much hassles of having one. You always need to buy Sony accessories to go with your laptop once anything broken. Sony computer products are not technically compatible with other brands’ stuff. It just causes troubles. I have been looking at some models, which are small and practical, but at last I found S6F. ASUS is a well known Taiwanese computer manufacturer, and also produce computer parts for some major brands in the market. They are good at reasonable price and quality. S6F is actually a design winning model in 2006. It does looks so similar to one of the Vaio’s model in 2005, which surface was also covered by leather. Here you can see very good comparison of S6F with other same levels of laptops. I like the specification of S6F. If there was same specification on Vaio, it would cost double the price of what I paid. It’s just not worthy.

The packing is so fancy made of very good quality of paper. I will keep the box as it’s just too nice. I have never seen such good packing for a laptop. The laptop is light, but the packing is heavy. It was so heavy for me carrying it back home as altogether ended up over 5kgs. lol

So far I did try most of the functions, and everything works fine. The size and the weight are exactly the same as my previous Vaio.

7.jpgIt weights 1.4kgs. Window Vista is alright, but the start up is a bit slow. A little window always pops up, and askes you if you wanted to continue your action once you are installing something or just opening some programmes. You just can’t close that window. The function is not really essential I think. It keeps popping out every while unless you don’t open programmes often. Regardless what set up I do for this laptop, I need to have password set up for every single action. The Bluetooth mouse also required password set up. LoL I feel tired of installing softwares. I was installing and uninstalling many times of softwares while my previous laptop had problems. I think I am not good at it anymore. :P There are funny gadgets from Window Vista that appeared on desktop such as clock, currency, weather and meter measurement etc., but you can also take them off. The weather forecast was set in Redmond, WA. I can’t change it to other states of the U.S. There is no Asian weather forecast as well.

Well, I believe my new companion can be with me for another four years or even longer…..My Vaio totally broke down for once in four years…and is the only time….

Gee, it’s a good thing you can keep track of Bill Gates’ weather in Redmond, WA. ;-) Unbelievable that you can’t change it to another location. It’s things like that that would make me seriously consider switching to Mac.

    Enjoy your new laptop!

The use of computers indeed has becoming more and more challenging. There are so many pop-ups seeking for our attention, so many software updating in the background, so many additional software we need to burden our machines just for combating virus and malware. There are so many processes running in our machines that are totally unrelated to our intended tasks. Our machines sometimes slow down for reasons that we don’t understand. Worse, our machines distract us from our tasks from time to time, telling us that we “might be at risk,” suggesting us to update, to download, or to stop doing anything else so as to restart. It is an irony that although the processors of today’s PC are faster than those several years ago, the time required to use our PC to get things done is pretty much the same because of all the overheads.

I try to enjoy it but it seems the Window Vista is very different from Window XP. I can’t say it’s not good, but just feel difference in many ways. I don’t get used to it yet.

You did make a good comment. You know Window Vista does update or pre-install something itself every while without asking you, so the drive does run itself from time to time in frequent regardless of I am running anything or not. I thought it was a problem, but after I did call many times to customer service then confirmed that Window Vista does work in this way. Technology does create problems sometimes. Many updates are not necessary, but they just ask you to update these and those, sometimes I am even confused if they are virus or not. LoL

    Joyce,

Nice looking laptop! I am familiar with the name as Asus has made over 3 million motherboards that are used in computers all over the United States. I use two of their products myself.

Regarding Windows Vista - - - there are many ways to turn off Auto-Updaters and Installers, as well as getting rid of the “Do you want to continue . . . ” screens. Check out http://technet.microsoft.com/ for details. They have both English and Chinese pages available.

Thank you for your information Jim. I will look at the Window Vista details again since I started to use it few days ago; there are many things I am still not so used to it…
